About Oneida

Perfection. That was Oneida’s goal nearly 200 years ago. It hasn’t changed.

Oneida was founded in upstate New York as an attempt at utopia. To support the community, members began making silverware. They soon became famous, as Oneida’s quality was, well, utopian. What is silverware? Silver has properties that help fight bacteria. Before disinfectants, utensils like spoons, cups, candlesticks, plates, and even table-weights were coated in silver to keep them sanitary. With the advent of modern soaps and dishwashers, real silver was no longer necessary. We now use stainless-steel instead, but the name stuck – any household utensil with that famous shine is technically silverware. In modern speech, however, ‘silverware’ became a synonym for flatware. Oneida became a synonym for top-of-the-line. Oneida revolutionized the industry when it premiered stainless-steel flatware in the 1960s. High-end products regular people could afford – the whole world could suddenly access the finest flatware. The whole world wanted Oneida. All-American hard work. This was Oneida’s vision in 1848. Over 170 years later, this defines our spirit today. All this time later, we’re still operating from right here in the USA.

Before using your Oneida stainless for the first time, we recommend that you wash it thoroughly in your dishwasher or by hand. To keep your flatware looking its best, we suggest the following tips:

In a Dishwasher: Your Oneida stainless is dishwasher safe and stain resistant. However, if any discoloration should develop (caused by hard water), use a stainless cleaner, and follow instructions carefully.

By Hand: Always use hot water and a mild soap or detergent. Rinse in clean, hot water and dry immediately.

General Information:

Avoid harsh detergents containing lemon, as they can harm flatware surfaces. Wash your stainless as soon as possible after each meal. This will prevent prolonged contact with harsh, acidic foods that may cause discoloration, corroding or pitting. It is also preferable to wash your stainless separately from aluminium, sterling or silver-plate. Never let your flatware soak (even in plain water) or leave unwashed overnight. Knife blades are particularly sensitive to acidic foods, soaking in water and air-drying. Therefore, it is very important that you wash your knives promptly after each use, and dry immediately. Do not store flatware in plastic or other wrappings that can trap moisture. Keep knives and any other hollow-handled flatware away from open flames and other sources of extreme heat. You should not try to sharpen any knives that have serrated edges, as it will damage the blade.

Why do stains occur on some stainless flatware?
Stainless steel flatware is stainless, but is not absolutely stain proof, especially under unfavourable conditions. Such common foods such as tea, coffee, vinegar, salt, mustard, mayonnaise, and eggs may stain, pit, or corrode your flatware when present for prolonged periods. Certain minerals in tap water may also affect flatware. Even the detergent used to wash our flatware in the dishwasher may harm flatware surfaces.

How do I remove stains from my stainless flatware?
Use a good quality stainless cleaner to remove the build-up caused by minerals.

Is Oneida stainless dishwasher safe?
Yes! Your Oneida stainless flatware is meant to be used and enjoyed. We suggest that you rinse your flatware after use before placing it in the dishwasher. Any scented detergent (i.e. lemon or orange) or detergents with citric acid are not suggested.

How should flatware be put into the dishwasher?
Load the dishwasher with the handles of the spoons and forks facing down and the handles of the knives up.
